Sign our Open Letter and share with your colleagues today!
As you know, our Union is bargaining with the JHU administration for a first contract to improve our working conditions. Our Bargaining Committee (BC) has been negotiating and fighting on behalf of each and every one of us since bargaining began in January, and while they have made progress and managed to reach a few fair compromises and agreements with the JHU admin, they have also met resistance.
Disappointingly, the JHU admin is pushing back against basic rights that are increasingly standard for unionized postdocs here in the US, and proposed policies that would better protect our work, our families, and ourselves. Therefore, we are calling on supportive members of our Union to sign our open letter addressed to the JHU admin to urge them to agree to our proposals that improve these rights in our workplace, and reflect the value we provide to the Hopkins community. Can you take a minute to sign this letter now?
How did we get here?
Our Union’s progress thus far is the result of our collective efforts that you, specifically, play a role in — whether by going to vote in favor of forming our union last summer, putting pressure on the administration by signing petitions, participating as an observer during a bargaining session, or simply talking to your colleagues about our workplace. All of these actions help our Union clear any hurdle imposed on by the JHU admin. We are, and should be, proud of our effort and achievements so far.
However, the JHU admin’s current unwillingness to agree to conditions and policies that increase our appointment security, provide protection against unfair termination, and more financial and administrative support for international researchers is unacceptable. These policies are the backbone that safeguard our ability to do the work we love at our institution that garnered its prestige because of that work that we do. We, as the members of our Union, will not agree to any contract that does meet our pressing demands of this moment.
Therefore, to lift up our voices and demonstrate to the administration the importance of reaching a just contract as quickly as possible, we are calling on you to sign our open letter urging President Daniels and the administration to accept our proposals on these issues that make JHU a stronger, more equitable place to work.
The more of us who sign our letter, the more we demonstrate that we are a strong majority of postdocs who support making JHU a better place to work. Can you take a few minutes to do the following right now?
-
Sign the Open Letter online linked here.
-
Share the letter with the postdocs in your lab or department and encourage them to sign as well!
We will also have supportive postdocs going around every building across every JHU campus with physical copies of the letter that you can discuss and sign. We are happy to answer any questions you may have, and can provide more information to you by responding to this email.
We will win a great contract for postdocs by standing together!
In solidarity,
PRO-UAW Organizing Committee
