We hope that everyone is doing well during these uncertain times. Our local union, Johns Hopkins PRO-UAW, and our international union, UAW, are very aware and concerned that the current political situation is frightening, confusing, and irritating for many of our members. We sincerely believe that a way to find strength and courage in times like these is to build up community and organize around the issue directly, as the protesters in Minnesota and around the U.S. are currently doing.
To start this effort within our union, we encourage you to join us and other union members for a town hall meeting on the 21st of February from 11:30am-12:30pm in the STILE Classroom, 115 PCTB, on JHU’s East Baltimore Campus to discuss how we’re feeling about the current immigration enforcement from ICE and other government agencies, and what we can do together as a union to respond to the federal government’s policies, protecting ourselves, and making JHU a safer community for all of us regardless of our immigration status
Our town hall will give an overview of resources (including legal support) available to us as members of the UAW, as well a larger discussion around the following questions:
- How have you been affected by ICE and federal government positions on immigration, and protecting protestors?
- How can we support each other and address these issues day-to-day at Hopkins??
- How are you feeling about Hopkins‘ response? What would you like to see from Hopkins?
- What policies or conditions would you change, or protect that currently exist, to make JHU a safe place for all workers?
- How can we work together as a union to provide access to resources or act together to address these issues?
- What can we win in our first contract to improve or protect these conditions? How can we work together beyond bargaining to improve or protect these conditions?
